Intent and Implementation

At Lingdale Primary School, we understand the importance of maths, not only as a subject, but the skills children acquire that will help them through their lives. Our culture is based around the idea that everyone can be mathematicians.

We have a passion that every child will be able to keep up, not catch up and through our rigorous and well designed trust curriculum we aim to do this. We give the children the strong foundational knowledge they need through fluency with number facts. This begins in Early Years through subitising and being able to recall facts up to 5 fluently and with automaticity.  Children will be able to recall number bonds and other addition and subtraction facts by the end of KS1. This gives the children a secure foundation to build from, not only become fluent in maths, but also foster a love of maths. In KS2, the focus turns to multiplication facts once the children are secure with adding and subtracting and we give all students a deeper conceptual understanding of all facts. With this understanding, children are encouraged to practise their tables skills to build to automaticity and every child has access to Numbots for number fluency and Time Table Rockstars for multiplication fluency.

Our lesson design model (LDM) developed Trust wide ensures that we consistently and regularly check for understanding and this prevents misconceptions and gaps appearing. This is done through pre-assessment checks before a unit of work, regular formative assessment before end of unit checks. If at any point a child is not achieving, we have opportunities for remediation and include pause lessons to cover misconceptions and reassess. Those children who excel are given deepening and stretch tasks to deepen their understanding further.

Impact

Following the above curriculum and ensuring strong foundational knowledge has led to further success in maths.

Our Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) results in 2025 were the highest we have achieved since its inception with an average score of 24.7 out of 25 for those who took the test and 75% of the children achieving full marks.

In our KS2 SATS in 2025, 86% of our children achieved the expected standard and 21% achieved a high level of attainment.
